Winky update (06.14.10): Winky was seen on July 13th at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston by neurologist, Dr. Sisson. He is now regaining strength and movement in his back legs but there is only slight progrss in his front legs so far. Winky's bandage was replaced by a special collar that will keep his spine in alignment and hopefully will allow more progress.

Winky update (06.04.10) : Winky was seen at Angell Medical Center by Dr. Sission. Small improvement in back legs. He changed his neck splint and he will see him in 2 weeks. Hoping for the best.

The Flower Dogs Sanctuary would like to thank everyone for their support in the recent raffle fundraiser for Winky's MRI / Medical Needs and possible surgery. We raised approximately half the money needed for Winky's immediate medical care. Look for updates soon on his progress. During the raffle period Thumbelina also needed emergency surgery for a cancerous mast cell tumor.

Winky had his MRI and a neck xray under anesthesia at Angell Medical Center, Boston Ma.  The neurologist, Dr. Sisson advised he wear a neck splint for 3 months before attempting surgery. Surgery is deemed highly risky given the serious nature of the results of his MRI, however the splint may make a major impact on his walking abilities. He spent two days at Angell Medical Center in the hospital and is now home. Winky will have to be transported to Angell Medical Center in Boston every 2 weeks to have the splint changed by Dr. Sisson and to determine progress and for continued medical care. Updates will be posted periodically.

Please check the web site for more details to come on a special fundraiser to raise the remainder of the funds needed for medical care for both Winky and Thumbelina.

Inspiration:  Saint Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals and the environment.  His teachings and respect for all living things are still with us today and continues to be the inspiration for the foundation of The Flower Dogs Sanctuary.

Mission:  To continue to provide 24 hour care for hard to place dogs such as blind, aged chained, pregnant, disabled or a high risk for immediate or deliberate death.  This is their forever place and they live in a home environment with lot of safe room to play outdoors on two acres.

Policy:  The Flower Dogs Sanctuary does not euthanize any animal. No animal will be chained and no animal will be allowed to reproduce.  We do not act as a foster home but rather a permanent refuge.  We do not allow dogs to be adopted out unless an already pregnant mother dog is rescued and her puppies will be adopted out.  Flower Dogs Sanctuary is a non-profit organization.

Because the animals living here are primarily elderly, sick and disabled, there is a greater need of donations from the public. Veterinarian bills are extremely high with this population.
Their lives are worth saving and the tail wagging is their way of saying
THANK YOU to all of you out there who have helped and continue to do so.
